From October 16-18, the inaugural Soundtrax Film Music Festival and Conference will feature a variety of concerts and films, including "John Williams Reimagined" and "Interstellar in Concert."
The festival, a collaboration between the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, aims to honor George Eastman's cinematic legacy. Eastman, who founded both the school and the Eastman Kodak Company, is known as the father of motion picture film.
Festival co-director Mark Watters describes the event as more than just a festival or conference. It is a celebration for film enthusiasts, offering a multi-sensory experience that inspires, connects, and elevates those passionate about the power of music and sound in visual media.
One of the highlights is "John Williams Reimagined," a live performance of John Williams' iconic film scores, reinterpreted for cello, flute, and piano. The performance features musicians who have played on many of Williams' original recordings, including Sara Andon on flute, Cecilia Tsan on cello, and Simone Pedroni on piano.
Another notable event is "Interstellar in Concert," which includes a performance by the film's original organist, Roger Sayer. Sayer will share his experiences working with director Christopher Nolan and composer Hans Zimmer. He will also play his original "Interstellar" arrangement on the historic sanctuary organ at Rochester’s Third Presbyterian Church.
The festival will also feature a live-to-picture performance of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 — In Concert" by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, Spike Lee's frequent collaborator, Terence Blanchard, will perform highlights from his body of work, including "25th Hour," "Malcolm X," and "Blackkklansman."
Eastman alumnus Jeff Beal will lead the Eastman Philharmonia in a performance of music from "The Red Violin in Concert," featuring Eastman professor Yoojin Jang.
Beyond the performances, the conference will include sessions on AI in music production, Dolby Atmos, and sound and music production. The event was organized by faculty from Eastman and the University of Rochester’s Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Mark Bocko, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering and the director, highlighted Rochester's unique blend of cultural significance and technological innovation, making it the perfect host for such an event. He emphasized that the festival offers a fun and fascinating way to explore how the artistry, science, and technology of sound and music shape visual media.
